SUPPORT FOR SANDY’S OBAMA NOBEL BLOG…
I was pleased to see (so much so I placed it on this blog!) that Gary L. Bauer, head of the Campaign for Working Families, agreed with me about Reagan:
But just like his West Point speech, Obama’s Nobel presentation promoted a distorted history, making one wonder where in the world he gets his information. Trying to make a case for diplomatic engagement with our enemies, Obama cited Ronald Reagan with this claim: “Ronald Reagan’s efforts on arms control and embrace of perestroika not only improved revelations with the Soviet Union, but empowered dissidents throughout Eastern Europe.” So according to Obama, Reagan was a dove.
Sorry, no dice. I was there. Reagan repeatedly confronted Soviet tyranny. He publicly called it the “focus of evil in the modern world.” He had a simple strategy, and, unlike Obama, Ronald Reagan was not uncomfortable with the concept of victory. Reagan’s plan was “We win; they lose.” He instituted a massive military buildup that showed the Soviets we could bury them. He confronted Soviet “adventurism” in Central America and Afghanistan. He worked with Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II to bring the Soviets to their knees. And, by the way, he did it all over the objections of the Obamas of his day, who labeled him a war monger for his efforts to defend freedom. There is no way we will allow Barack Obama to rewrite that history and steal the Reagan legacy of “peace through strength.” (From the End of Day – 12/11/09 that you can and should get by just emailing Bauer at www.ouramericanvalues.org)
Gary L. Bauer should know. He was Undersecretary of Education in President Reagan’s administration and served Reagan again as Chairman of the Special Working Group on the Family. He defended Reagan better and more eloquently than I did. But it’s nice to have confirmation…
